5 FSMO Roles – SCHEMA Masters and DC Hosting Forest Structure

  • 2 FSMO Roles are configured at the forest level and are typically hosted on DCs in the forest root domain. The first DC in the forest hosts the roles until they are moved.
  • Schema Master
  • Domain Naming Master
  • 3 FSMO Roles are configured at the domain level. Each domain hosts their own set of these FSMO roles. The first DC in each domain created hosts the roles until they are moved.
  • PDC Emulator
  • Infrastructure Master
  • RID Master

  • The DC hosting the Schema Master role can make changes or extend the schema.
  • A read-only copy of the schema is copied over to all DCs as part of the schema partition.
  • Without a functional Schema Master Role, no changes to the schema or forest functionality level can occur.

  • The DC hosting this role can make changes to the forest structure.
  • Without a functioning Domain Naming Master, the addition or removal of domains within the forest is not possible
